What Is Spiritual Wickedness in High Places? Shedding Light on the Dark Atmosphere That Hangs Over Nations
In this fourth installment of our Warfare in the Unseen Realm series, we uncover the mysterious phrase Paul places at the summit of his hierarchy: “spiritual wickedness in high places.” Unlike principalities, powers, and rulers of darkness, this final category is not a rank of beings — it is the atmosphere their rebellion creates. This article explores the dark spiritual climate that hangs over nations, cultures, systems, and generations, shaping the moral air humanity breathes. Through biblical insight, vivid imagery, and mature spiritual understanding, we examine how this wickedness forms, how it affects believers, and how the armor of God enables us not just to survive it, but to stand unshaken within it. This is a deep, sobering, and empowering teaching for those ready to understand the spiritual world not only at the level of entities, but at the level of atmosphere.

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL WICKEDNESS IN HIGH PLACES?
The Dark Atmosphere That Hangs Over Nations
There is a moment in Paul’s revelation where his voice shifts.
He has been climbing a ladder into the unseen realm, naming each rung with precision:
Principalities — ancient fallen thrones over nations.
Powers — enforcers of their will within systems and structures.
Rulers of Darkness — architects of cultural and moral decay across the age.
And then he reaches the summit, and instead of naming a fourth spiritual being, he names something else entirely:
“Against spiritual wickedness in high places.”
— Ephesians 6:12
It is as if Paul, having unveiled the hierarchy of evil, now pulls back the curtain on the air itself...
the atmosphere formed by their collective rebellion.
He shifts from beings to conditions, from hierarchy to climate...
from thrones to the darkness that drips off them.
This final phrase is not a rank of spirits...
It is the fog of war that settles over the world they influence.
It is the pollution of the unseen realm,
the fumes of rebellion,
the spiritual smog inhaled by humanity without realizing it.
Paul is describing not a creature... but a climate.
THE HIGH PLACES — THE SPIRITUAL STRATOSPHERE WHERE HISTORY IS SHAPED
“High places” in Scripture were always more than geography...
They were altars.
Gateways.
Spiritual vantage points where agreements were made and powers enthroned.
The prophets cried out against Israel’s high places...
because what happened there determined what happened everywhere else.
Paul uses the same language deliberately.
The “high places” he speaks of are not hills...
they are the elevated spiritual regions where:
• Principalities establish territorial rule.
• Powers manage the infrastructure of deception.
• Rulers of Darkness send down shadow over societies.
It is the unseen stratosphere above earthly life...
the realm where decisions ripple downward into nations, ideologies, institutions, families, and hearts.
Those who have walked with God long enough can feel the shift when the atmosphere changes...
a heaviness, a confusion, an acceleration of lawlessness,
as if the air grows thick and morality begins to rot.
That is the wickedness in high places.
SPIRITUAL WICKEDNESS — NOT A BEING, BUT A CONDITION
Everything Paul named before this point carried personhood:
princes, authorities, rulers.
But now he names wickedness itself.
This is crucial.
This is not another demonic spirit or rank...
This is the collective output of the entire hierarchy operating at full strength.
It is:
• the corruption that fills the air
• the spiritual toxins released by rebellion
• the moral pollution that drifts across generations
• the atmosphere that resists holiness
• the environment where sin feels normal and righteousness feels strange
Think of a battlefield after centuries of war... smoke, ash, the smell of death lingering long after the soldiers have moved on.
That is spiritual wickedness in high places...
The scent of rebellion permeating the realm above.
It is the air that humanity breathes.
THE WORLD FEELS DARK BECAUSE THE AIR IS DARK
Wickedness in high places explains why corruption doesn’t spread like a rumor...
it spreads like weather.
Why temptation doesn’t just come to individuals...
it descends on cultures like a season.
Why deception doesn’t simply mislead...
it blinds entire generations at once.
Why rebellion doesn’t feel accidental...
it feels orchestrated.
You’ve felt it...
that shift where an entire society begins approving what God calls sin,
where righteousness becomes offensive,
where truth becomes optional,
where chaos becomes fashionable.
That is not human ingenuity...
That is atmosphere.
Sin is the fruit...
Wickedness in high places is the soil.
THE ATMOSPHERE WHERE DARK POWERS THRIVE
Principalities build thrones.
Powers enforce decrees.
Rulers of Darkness shape culture.
But spiritual wickedness is the air they all breathe,
the spiritual ecosystem required for their influence to thrive.
In that climate:
• idols feel logical,
• deception feels enlightened,
• immorality feels liberating,
• rebellion feels like identity,
• God feels distant.
People do not drift into darkness...
the darkness surrounds them.
And they inhale it without knowing.
This is why Paul does not call believers to “cast out” spiritual wickedness.
You can cast out a demon.
But a climate?
You stand against it.
You endure it without becoming part of it.
You walk through it without absorbing its poison.
You breathe heavenly air in a polluted world.
This is maturity...
not escape... but resistance.
WHY PAUL GIVES US ARMOR
Paul names this atmospheric wickedness before giving the armor of God because the armor is not primarily for attacking demons...
it is for surviving the climate.
Truth protects you from the lies in the air.
Righteousness protects you from the moral decay in the air.
Faith shields you from the fear in the air.
The gospel steadies you in the chaos in the air.
Salvation anchors you against identity confusion in the air.
The Word cuts through the distortion in the air.
Prayer keeps your lungs filled with heaven while the world chokes on darkness.
The armor is not for the demon in front of you...
It is for the atmosphere around you.
You do not walk naked into a spiritual storm...
You are clothed in Christ Himself.
DARKNESS DOES NOT FEAR YOU — IT FEARS WHO YOU BELONG TO
Here is the truth Paul is leading us toward:
You are not at the mercy of the atmosphere.
Darkness saturates the high places...
Christ saturates you.
The kingdom of darkness influences from above...
The Kingdom of God breaks out from within.
Light is not defensive... it is disruptive.
Light doesn’t negotiate... it invades.
Light doesn’t retreat... it reveals.
Light doesn’t tremble... it exposes.
Every believer walking in the armor of God becomes a breach in the atmosphere,
a tear in the veil...
a doorway through which heaven’s air pours into a suffocating world.
Spiritual wickedness in high places may fill the skies...
but it cannot eclipse the Spirit of God within the sons and daughters of the King.
Darkness creates climate.
Jesus creates kingdom...
And kingdom always wins.
